Queen Elizabeth loves Royal Ascot almost as much as it loves her. The British monarch, a noted horse racing enthusiast, thoroughly enjoys the annual race meeting. She's also a major feature of the event itself, arriving every day in a carriage procession alongside other members of the royal family, and inspiring a cottage industry of gambling centered on what color hat she'll choose for the occasion.

This year, as with so many other events, Royal Ascot had to change considerably due to the coronavirus crisis. The races will carry on, but without any fans in the stands. So for the first time in her 68-year reign, the Queen will have to watch from home.

Still, she found one small way to take part: writing the introduction to the Royal Ascot racecard, as she usually does. The Ascot racecourse shared the Queen's note on Twitter, in which she thanks the "valiant efforts" of those who are making the event possible despite the pandemic, and wishes those attending, "in person or virtually," to "have a most enjoyable and unique week of racing."

I send my best wishes to the thousands of racing professionals and enthusiasts who will join me in celebrating this year's Royal Ascot.

In these challenging times, we are once again delighted to welcome the best horses and jockeys from across the world and pay tribute to those who have helped make this race meeting possible.

This year Ascot will feel different for many, as it is so often a chance for friends, families, and colleagues to gather together and enjoy a shared passion. I am sure however, that with the valiant efforts of the organisers, owners, trainers and stable staff, it will remain one of Britain's finest sporting occasions and a highlight of the racing calendar.

To everyone attending Royal Ascot, in person or virtually, I hope you have a most enjoyable week of racing.
