See Every Outfit Melania Trump Has Worn During the State Visit to the U.K.
From her sleeveless Dior gown at the state banquet to a Celine trench coat.
Thoughtfully preparing a wardrobe for a state visit is no easy task. Take the First Lady's trip to England this week, for example. Following protocol, and dressing appropriately for every event on the itinerary is critical.
"The office carefully to prepare our President and first lady (and delegation) of what is expected all before the moment the door of Air Force One opens in England," Pamela Eyring, the president of the Protocol School of Washington, shared in a recent interview with CNN.
"This will include cultural customs and courtesies of the UK, arrival, motorcade route, security, media, weather, which could affect dress and attire at different events."
Sartorial diplomacy is also key in curating effective state visit ensembles.
Kate Betts, a fashion journalist and the author of Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style suggested that Melania should wear both American designers and clothing that references the U.K. during the visit.
"The best choice of outfit, in terms of diplomacy, would be to wear the work of an English designer or a young American designer," Betts, told CNN.
"The first family should represent our country with dignity and pride, but it would also be a gracious gesture if they acknowledged the British fashion industry in some way," she said.
Thus far, Melania has worn a range of designers, some that nod to the goals of this week's state visit (Burberry, Michael Kors), and others that don't appear to (Dolce & Gabbana, Hervé Pierre, Dior, Celine, Hermès). See all of her outfits from the trip so far below:
