From nap pods and free snacks to in-office gyms and unlimited vacation time, many companies, particularly in the start-up and tech spaces, are increasingly using unique perks and benefits to recruit top talent.

Now, according to Business Insider, some companies are enticing employees with the promise of paid time off when they adopt a puppy, kitten, or other furball.

Sounds great, right?

But before you start updating your resume in hopes of bringing home a six-week-old labrador retriever, keep in mind that this appears to be a hiring trend really finding its footing in the U.K.

And not only are all three companies referenced in the article—BrewDog, BitSol Solutions, and Mars Petcare—located in Great Britain, but per a 2012 survey done by insurance provider Petplan, just five percent of pet owners in the UK have "been offered paid leave from their job to undertake their pet owning duties."

Additionally, Business Insider notes the companies, including some in the States, that allow employees to take leave when a beloved animal dies. San Francisco's Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants and Seattle-based Trupanion are among those that allow people to take time off to grieve.

And honestly, it shouldn't be so surprising that the U.S. would fall behind the U.K. in terms of employee leave benefits. The United States is one of only a few developed countries in the world that does not have federally mandated paid maternity leave.
