Last month, London police offers found the body of an unidentified woman in the pond fronting Kensington Palace.

"Police were called to Kensington Gardens W2 at 7:09am on Saturday, 29 August to a report of the concern for the safety of a woman," a Metropolitan Police spokesman told Sky News. "The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time, but is not thought to be suspicious. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased."

The body was found in the Round Pond, a water feature that sits near the edge of Kensington Gardens, a public park that was once a part of the palace's grounds.

The incident took place nearby Prince William and Kate Middleton's London residence, Kensington Palace Apartment 1A, but the royal couple and their three children were far away at the time, visiting with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at Balmoral in Scotland. It's not clear if any other members of the royal family—including Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, who reside in the palace's Ivy Cottage—were on the premises at the time.

London is, however, about to see more royals than it has in some time. In March, senior family members left the city amid the coronavirus pandemic, choosing to stay in their more remote residences: Windsor Castle for the Queen and Philip, Anmer Hall for William and Kate, and Birkhall for Prince Charles and Camilla. In August, it was reported that both William and Kate and Charles and Camilla would soon return to their London homes—and just this week, royal watchers learned that plans are in the works for the Queen to undertake some engagements and audiences at Buckingham Palace, though she'll continue to live at Windsor.
